Meet Flossie: Crowned Oldest Living Cat at 27 Years Old
A sweet tortoiseshell named Flossie now holds the title of Guinness World Records Oldest Living Cat at 27 years and 329 days - that's 120 human years!
The 27-year-old tortoiseshell started life in 1995 living as a stray near the Merseyside hospital in Liverpool, northwestern England.
“I knew from the start that Flossie was a special cat, but I didn’t imagine I’d share my home with a world record holder,” said owner Vicki Green. Green adopted the elderly cat from Cats Protection, a UK cat welfare charity.
“She’s so affectionate and playful, especially sweet when you remember how old she is. I’m immensely proud that Cats Protection matched me with such an amazing cat,” added Green.
Guinness World Records described Flossie in their announcement as “a beautiful brown and black kitty with a gentle disposition and who loves cuddles and food, has seen different homes throughout her long life.”
Flossie has outlived two of her owners. She spent her first 10 years with a Merseyside hospital worker that adopted her from her colony. When her human passed away, the woman’s sister then adopted Flossie and she spent 14 years with the sister until she also passed away. Her second owner’s son then took her in and she spent 3 years with him before being placed at Cats Protection.
Workers at the cat charity were surprised when they realized Flossies’ age. “We were flabbergasted when we saw that Flossie’s vet records showed her to be 27 years old,” said Naomi Rosling, coordinator for Cat’s Protection. Elderly pets can often have a difficult time finding someone to adopt them.
“I’ve always wanted to give older cats a comfortable later life,” said Green who has cared for numerous senior cats. Continued Green, “She sometimes misses her litter box or needs help grooming herself, but I can help with all of that. We’re in this together.”
While many senior cats who end up at the shelters spend their last years there, it's heartwarming to hear of such a senior kitty getting to live her golden years in the comfort of a loving home.
The title of the oldest cat to have ever lived goes to Creme Puff, who lived to be 38 years and 3 days old!
A picture of Flossie would have been the icing on the cake!
Cats are wonderful, friends and companions. They are more loving and affectionate than some people give credit to. Adopt the ones that need a loving and stable home. You won’t regret it. It’s the cats in Centers that need homes, make the choice and you’ll be glad that you did.
I had a wonderful little Siamese boy for 22 years! He was my friend and my comforter!
